Production houses dance

 Young and adventurous contemporary dance

Apart from dance companies, the Netherlands boasts other places which provide the space for experimentation and where choreographers are supervised as they make their first steps on the national and international dance market. The role of these production houses as they are called has become indispensable in the development of dance talent.

Dansateliers is Rotterdam’s independent professional dance laboratory and production house for new choreographers. It is critical in its selection, searching for authentic, diverse and innovative minds. Dansateliers offers talented choreographers the opportunity to find, develop and crystallize their own style, to work with artists from other disciplines and to engage in dialogue with other choreographers as well as dramaturges and audiences. Dansateliers offers different formats, according to the needs of the artistic concept. Choreographers can submit project proposals, but Dansateliers also actively scouts talent who may be commissioned to produce specific work. Dansateliers collaborates with Conny Jansen Danst, MEEKERS and the Urban Explorers Festival on various co-productions.

New choreographers currently working in the production house are Mor Shani, Tabea Martin, Liat Waysbort, Julian Barnett, Valasia Simeon, Jan Martens and Jasper van Luijk.
Dansateliers is one of the partners in the extensive international project ChoreoRoamEurope, a professional research program for choreography supported by the European Union Culture Programme. The project aims to build an international community of choreographers international and connects choreographers from Holland, Italy, England, Croatia and Spain. It also aims to stimulate the emergence of new talent by means of dialogue, encounters and interaction between the participants and local audiences and other art forms and within and beyond their own countries.

Danshuis Station Zuid, based in the south of the Netherlands, has grown into a meeting place for different movements in the world of contemporary dance. We create dance productions for the stage from this fusion that inspire and move a wide audience.

This ‘central station’ for professional choreographers and dance amateurs from all creative corners of the world is situated in the heart of Tilburg, City of Dance. It is anchored within the European Dance Network of similar dance houses, from Central Europe to Scandinavia so it is able to draw from a meltingpot of international development, exchange, experience, research and experiment in contemporary dance.

Danshuis Station Zuid is a place where ambitious dancers and choreographers book their artistic journeys, internationally inspired but aimed at the Dutch stage. It is also the place where professional choreographers meet the amateur field. From here they initiate dance events across the south of the Netherlands and far beyond.

Danshuis Station Zuid is about integrating dance and audiences, allowing audiences to participate in dance. About motivating people within the context of artistic practice by getting them involved in every way possible.

Dansmakers Amsterdam is a workplace and production house for young and adventurous contemporary choreographers. It selects critically, provides expert guidance and facilities, stimulates choreographers in their craftsmanship and individuality and introduces them into the national and international dance arena as professional, innovative choreographers.

The continuous stream of work and production at Dansmakers provides a framework within which choreographers can build up their own broad-based professional practice. The basic premise is: critical reflection on choreographers’ own work, and the development of highly expressive concepts in a unique and distinctive physical language.

Dansmakers has its own, strong position within the Amsterdam, Dutch and international networks. Dansmakers is currently producing work by several talented choreographers within the production house: Gabriella Maiorino, Cecilia Moisio, Jochen Stechmann, Mouna Laroussi (in collaboration with Kathrin Gramelsberger and Tamar Shahinian), Christiane Da Cunha & Fernando Belfiore. The work created by these choreographers is characterised by its theatrical, conceptual and innovative strength. Dansmakers also supports various up and coming young choreographers with their research & development projects, providing them with artistic coaching, technical, management, production and publicity support, studio space and presentation facilities.

Dansmakers also co-produces on an international level with Tao Dance and Francesco Scavetta.

Frascati Productions is the biggest production house in the Netherlands. Every year, it initiates and produces some fourteen productions by the most talented directors from the Netherlands and further afield. Productions range from the small and experimental in Frascati WG, to entire touring productions that premier in Frascati on de Nes. Frascati’s directors often make inventive use of several disciplines for their productions, combining text, new media, mime and dance for example. They draw their inspiration from everyday life; society; Dutch and foreign politics; science and philosophy.

Frascati directors are highly diverse and characterised by their urge to stray from the beaten track. They are supported in their artistic, marketing, production and commercial endeavours and frascati has stimulated the early careers of successful directors such as Jetse Batelaan (Ro Theater), Sabri Saad El Hamus and Ivana Müller. It is currently producing work by, amongst others, Laura van Dolron, Lucas De Man, Andrea Božić, Sarah Vanhee, Julie Van den Berghe and Melih Gençboyacı.

A number of these directors also tour international theatres and festivals. Frascati is also a member of various international networks including other European theatres, festivals and producers such as Brut (Vienna), Mousonturm (Frankfurt), Les Laboratoires dÁubervilliers (Pairs) and Dampfcentrale (Bern).

Grand Theatre Groningen

Grand Theatre Groningen is one of the larger production houses in the Netherlands producing about twenty dance, theatre, new media and music productions a year.
Grand Theatre Groningen is intensively involved with directors and choreographers as a producer at the beginning of their careers; the production house guides them in their growth towards independence. A recent example is Club Guy & Roni. In recent years, there have also been international co-productions with Matanicola, The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma and Ea Sola. Keren Levi, Pieter de Ruiter and Beppie Blankert are just some of the directors established in the Netherlands who have worked at Grand Theatre.
Grand Theatre Groningen works in ‘splendid isolation’ in the Netherlands. The nearest institutions of education for theatre and dance are at least 200 kilometres away which means that professional directors do not just start working at the production house by chance. Directors who nevertheless choose Grand Theatre Groningen do so with good reason: to work in a relatively protected situation, in a professional but informal atmosphere and, because of the combination of production house and venue, to work in a fertile meeting place.

Korzo producties is the Netherlands’ largest production house for dance. Based in The Hague for more than twenty years, it now has an important national role and a growing international reputation. Korzo producties has set itself the task of signalling, mobilizing and supervising choreographic talent. Alongside this, Korzo producties is the driving force behind events such as the bi-annual CaDance festival and various initiatives designed to give new impetus to the Dutch dance sector, including DansClick.

Korzo producties introduces new choreographers with the talent and individuality needed to elevate the future of Dutch dance. The production house also produces new shows by choreographers who have already been winning national (and increasingly international) favour for some time. Choreographers including André Gingras, Dylan Newcomb, Bruno Listopad, Ann Van den Broek, Sjoerd Vreugdenhil and Kenzo Kusuda all embarked on successful careers thanks to Korzo producties.
