Kassys is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and was founded by Liesbeth Gritter and Mette van der Sijs in 1999. Kassys produces work combining film and theatre in which the codes of both media are used (and abused) but their original forms are being preserved.

Balancing on the dividing lines between imagination, fiction and reality, acted or otherwise, Kassys exhibits the beauty of human success and failure.

Motivated by curiosity, concern and irritation, Kassys challenges the audience to observe the mechanisms of human behaviour. The result is often disillusionment, sometimes hilariously recognisable, but always with an eye for detail and self mockery.

International: 

Kassys have toured their productions Kommer, Liga and Good Cop Bad Cop to Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Finland, Australia and the United States and were well received by the international press.

In 2011, Our Brisbane wrote about Good Cop Bad Cop, ‘It’s theatre that makes you think, analyse and laugh out loud. It’s a wickedly funny acknowledgement of the banality of so much of what we hear in our tell-all culture.’

Kassys won the ZKB Recognition Prize 2009 with Good Cop Bad Cop at the Zurcher Theater Spektakel.

Kassys is working on a new project, Cadavre Exquis, an international collaboration with the Nature Theater of Oklahoma (US), Tim Crouch (UK) and Nicole Beutler (DE/NL).

Cadavre Exquis is a ‘relay’ production in which each company creates a performance of 15 minutes. Each company only gets to see the last image of the previous company’s performance as its starting point. Kassys will be making the first and the last part.
